An in-force ledger is the current map of a policy you already own.
Ask for it before replacing, surrendering, borrowing from, or adding premium to the policy. The annual statement is too thin for that job.
If you want a second-opinion path on an existing policy, use review coverage.
Copyable Request
Send this to the carrier or servicing agent:
Please send an in-force ledger for my policy. Include guaranteed assumptions and current assumptions. Please also include current cash value, current surrender value, death benefit, premium due dates, loan balance, loan interest rate, rider list, and surrender charge schedule. If possible, include a scenario with no future premium changes and a scenario matching any proposed change under discussion.
Checklist
| Item | What to collect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Current cash value | Current account or policy value before surrender adjustments. | The walk-away number may be lower. |
| Current surrender value | Value after surrender charges and adjustments. | This is the exit number. |
| Guaranteed projection | Future values under guaranteed assumptions. | This is the floor. |
| Current-assumption projection | Future values under current assumptions. | This is the optimistic path, not a promise. |
| Premium due dates | Required, planned, or scheduled premium by year. | Premium strain can hide in year 8, 12, or 20. |
| Loan balance | Current balance and accrued interest. | Loans can bend lapse and tax risk. |
| Loan rate | Fixed or variable rate and current rate. | Borrowing cost can change the policy path. |
| Rider list | Active riders, costs, and expiration terms. | Riders can add cost or value. |
| Surrender charges | Charge schedule and remaining years. | Replacement math needs the exit cost. |
Questions After You Receive It
- How far apart are guaranteed and current-assumption values?
- What future premium does the policy need under each assumption set?
- Is the death benefit level, increasing, or changing another way?
- Are any riders driving cost without solving the current problem?
- Does a loan balance create lapse or tax risk?
- What is the surrender value today?
- Would a proposed replacement start a new surrender period?
- How is the person recommending a change paid?
